Nepal, officially the Federal People's Republic of Nepal, is an independent country with an area of 147,181 km2 and a population of 29,911,840. Its capital is Kathmandu. It is located mainly in the Himalayas, but also includes parts of the Indo-Gangetic Plain, bordering Tibet of China to the north and India to the south, east and west.

Nepal has a diverse geography, including fertile plains, subalpine forested hills, and eight of the world's ten highest mountains, including Mount Everest, the highest point on Earth. It is also one of the most important spiritual destinations in the world, attracting thousands of pilgrims every year, as it is the birthplace of Buddha and a place of deep Hindu tradition.
